On April 27, 2011 alumni, staff and community leaders met with Congressman Raúl Grijalva at El Rio Learning Center in Tucson, Arizona to hear about the latest budget news in relation to WIA, adult education and family literacy funding.

Lina Prieto, a graduate of adult education at El Rio Learning Center, welcomed the round table participants with a few words about her experience of becoming a leader in her community and a career working for the Pima Community College. She took the opportunity to thank Raúl Grijalva for his involvement in advocating for new buildings at El Rio and El Pueblo Liberty and for his ongoing support for adult education.

Grijalva shared his view that adult education and family literacy produces a positive multiplier effect that ripples out into families, communities, and the economy. He encouraged advocates to communicate with Senators and the Obama administration about the role that adult education can play in economic recovery. He recommended concise, direct messages to Senators and Administration. Face to face visits are the best way to build awareness about adult education programs, especially with the participation of students and alumni; they have the strongest voices.
