1) In January the Arizona Governor Jan Brewer proposed elimination of state money for adult education and family literacy.

2) Students, staff and community supporters around the state have responded by sending thousands of letters, emails, and calls, holding two major rallies, and getting press coverage.

3) The Legislature completed their budget for Arizona. Their budget also eliminates state funding for adult education and family literacy. Now, the Governor has the power to save or eliminate state funding for adult education.

4) Leaders in Adult Education and the community are working hard for the future of adult education classes. We will tell you in April how students can participate.

5) Remember: Continue coming to class! This is your opportunity to learn!

  1. It is quite sad that the governor of Arizona is cutting the budget for its adult literacy programs. I’m sure there is fraud, waste and abuse that has triggered this devastating decision. However, it would be a travesty to completely eliminate this program as it will greatly affect Arizona’s economy. An illiterate constituency makes for very bad policies. Currently policy makers will retire or leave their offices to be replaced by those suffering from illiteracy. I hope the governor has taken this into consideration when voting on this policy.

Although I am a Missouri resident, I have witnessed the terrible costs to our local society and economy from the lack of literacy. American must revisit its literacy responsibilities so we can compete equally in the global economy.
