Northland Pioneer College lobbies to keep GED funding

Did you drop out of high school and not return for a diploma? The chances of correcting that oversight may soon be much more difficult and far more costly. Budget cuts proposed by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer will eliminate funding for the free instruction that helps those trying to earn General Equivalency Diplomas (GEDs).
A group of eight NPC students and two staff members recently joined with about 400 other advocates at activities staged at the Arizona State Capitol to save GED funding.
A number of groups met with their appropriate state legislators to garner support for continued funding. Rickey Jackson, director of NPC Developmental Services Department, and his group met with state representative Bill Konopnicki. “We’re hoping that we can educate and build relationships with the majority party lawmakers who will be deciding the fate of Adult Basic Education in the next few weeks,” said Jackson.
