Classmates Samantha Garcia and Ashley Rosales decided to earn their GED diplomas as a way to get better jobs faster.
“It helped us get what we needed done and get us on the right path,” said Rosales, 22. She and Garcia, 18, plan to become nursing assistants.
Sitting on stage at the Tucson Convention Center in formalwear and graduation gowns on Thursday, the friends carried glowing wands so their proud families could spot them easily.
Around 1,180 students will receive their GED diplomas this year through the Pima Community College Adult Education Program, including about 250 grads at Thursday’s ceremony.
Future funding of the Adult Education Program is uncertain. The state’s 2012 budget cut funding for adult education entirely.
