AZ Daily Star -Cutting GED, adult education would deepen Arizona’s budget deficit

This article was in the Arizona Daily Star today thanks to Betty Stauffer.

Many of Gov. Jan Brewer’s proposed budget cuts are painful – but eliminating all GED testing is a disservice to our citizens that will earn us national disgrace.

Arizona has one of the highest high school dropout rates in the nation. Without GED testing there will be no opportunity for high school dropouts to earn their diplomas. Arizona would become the only state in the nation without this service.

In 2008, 18 percent of all high school diplomas issued in Arizona were GED diplomas. That’s nearly one-fifth of all Arizona high school graduates.

Without a high school diploma it is nearly impossible to go on to further training or to get a job. Seventy percent of welfare recipients and 65 percent of the state prison population do not have high school diplomas. Click here for full article
