Two community organizations have made vital grants to Pima Community College Adult Education (PCAE) to provide scholarships for PCC college courses and GED test fees, and to fund the launch of an innovative family literacy curriculum. The Community Foundation
for Southern Arizona (CFSA) awarded PCAE a $21,000 grant to cover GED test fees for adult learners and to provide tuition scholarships to PCAE graduates who enroll at Pima Community College. Seventy-two low-income students completed the GED test and received their Arizona High School Equivalency Diploma, and 58 students received a $250 scholarship to enroll in at least one PCC course through the CFSA grant, according to Regina Suitt, PCC’s Advanced Program Manager for Adult Education Services. “GED test fees and scholarships are not limited only to PCC students, but also are available to participants in programs offered through Job Corps, Las Artes, the Pima County Probation Department and the Salvation Army. We consider them our partners as well,” Suitt emphasized. PCAE also has received a $26,000 grant from the Literacy for Life Coalition (LLC) for a workplace literacy program, a GED community class at Literacy Volunteers of Tucson, and the family literacy curriculum.
